Interview with Greg Hildebrandt
Who are your main influences as an artist?
My main influences are, the 30' - 50's Disney artists, comic strip artists Hal Foster, Alex Raymond, Milt Caniff, Comic Book artists, Joe Kubert, Wally Wood, Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, Illustrators, NC Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Norman Rockwell, Classic painters, Many English Academy painters, pre-Raphaelites, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Michelangelo, DaVinci etc. Contemporary, Bob Peak and Bernie Fuchs.
What elements does great fantasy art have?
I do not think that Fantasy art sets itself apart from any other good art. So the elements I believe that make good art are, composition, imagination, good drawing, color and lighting.
You have made noir illustrations. What makes a noir cover memorable?
I am not sure what makes any cover memorable. Noir has a very specific lighting sense to it. It is dark and moody. Without that and good composition you can't have a good cover.
When you read, do you always think how you would illustrate the text?
I always visualize when I read anything so I suppose the answer to your question is yes.
